Sir Joe Quarterman, a singer and trumpet player based in Washington, DC., was given the nickname “Sir Joe” while singing in a group called The Knights while in high school. From that time on he has worked with a female backing quartet called Sir Joe and The Maidens and played trumpet for The El Corals (a.k.a. The Magnificent Seven) who were, at one time, the backing band for Garnet Mimms. After playing in the the jazz-oriented Orlando Smith Quintet he formed the band Free Soul. They recorded their only album “Sir Joe Quarterman & Free Soul” after the single “(I Got) So Much Trouble In My Mind” made it into the R&B Top 30 for 1973.
